The sound of a small child crying echoed throughout the decrepit streets of Oak town. The cries seemed to be ignored by the citizens as they each scurried to their homes before a summer storm found its way there; all the citizens but one. A lone man stood there at the corner of Market and 19th street of Oak town watching the people run their separate ways and listening to the sound of the child’s wail. After a few moments the figure started to move towards the alleyway that the cries seemed to be generating from, as he slipped into the dank alley he noticed a pungent odor that seemed to cause the hairs on the back of his neck to twist and coil inwards. It was an odor that the man had smelled many times before and had grown accustomed to throughout the ages, the odor was that of death. The man dragged his cloak through the muck that littered the alley’s ground and proceeded towards the crying child.
As the figured turned a corner he found the source of not only the crying but also the smell. There sitting in a pile of its own shit was a small girl, no more than seven years of age. The girl sat there clinging to a limp figured that one could guess was her mother. The mother’s skin was pale and hair looked as if it was black straw, the cloths of both the child and mother were covered in dirt and shit, full of holes, and looked as if the material was swallowing the two. After a moment of assessing the situation the figure lifted his cloak just a tad so the shit on the ground would not brush against it and proceeded towards the child and corpse of a mother. As his shadow loomed over the small girl her cries seemed to subside as she was in awe of this new figure standing before her.
Up close one could see the hard truth of the poverty that this young girl had gone through in the three short years of her life; her eyes were sunken in from malnutrition, her skin covered in shit and mud, teeth as yellow as corn, and hair that looked matted and tangled. With eyes the color of emeralds she peered into the darkness of the man’s cloak in an attempt to see the stranger’s face. With a weak voice that constantly was choked up the young girl spoke to the stranger before her. “Cccan you help my moommmy? S-she isn’t waking up anymore and I am so hungry.” The figure hunched down and offered out his hand. “Little girl your mommy has moved on to the next world, please take my hand we will get you washed up and some warm food in your tummy.”
With a trembling hand the girl took the figures. With a fluid motion the cloaked man pulled the girl from the muck and feces and away from the corpse. Instantly the girl pulled her body towards the man burying her face in his warm cloak. It was not long before the figure felt moister from the girl’s tears seeping through the material. He pattered her back and began to walk away from the alley back towards the street. The grumble of ominous thunder filled the air signaling to the man that their time was nearly up and he needed to get the girl to safety. Causing magic to fill his body and the air around him the figure along with the girl seemed to disappear instantly from that god forsaken alley in that god forsaken town.
The sudden surge of high concentrated magic along with a poor diet seemed to cause the girl to faint in his arms. She would not be aware of the cavern that he took her to, nor would she see the different people that filled said cavern, thieves, murders, and other criminals. No by the time she would awake she would be resting in a nice plush bed settled on top of the cavern, next to a nice warm fire and a bowl of soup waiting for her. For you see the place that the girl would awake to would be that of Hamlet Falls Orphanage. A quaint little hamlet on the edge of Oak’s forest next to a rather large river and waterfall, it had been standing there for many generations before and would stand there for many generations to come. The cloaked figure would sit by the little girls bed awaiting for her to awaken.
As her eyes slowly opened the figure would stand from the chair he was sitting at and move towards the bed with fresh garments for the young girl to change into. “Where am I? And who are you? My head, it feels foggy as if somebody spun me around like a top.” A slight chuckle seemed to emerge from the darkness of the cloak. It seemed that the girl was feeling the effects of the figure’s magic. “Well I can answer any question you may have little one. You are in a small village outside of Oak known as Hamlet Falls, more importantly you are in the orphanage located in that village. I am Ethan Krow, the head of the orphanage and the one that brought you here. “ Ethan removed the cloak to revel his face to the child so that she could feel a sense of safety knowing who she was talking to.
“You see little one I brought you here after seeing that your mother was dead and the state you are in. I founded this orphanage many years ago for those that society had casted aside, much like yourself and your mother. Here I hope to create a new life for these children so that they can become accomplished members of society in their own regards. If you wish you may stay here with us and grow strong and learn how to read and write like many of the little lords and ladies of Fiore do. We will also teach you skills that those lords and ladies would never dream of knowing. If you do not wish for such a life you are free to leave whenever you chose but you must do so before the age of thirteen or you will enter a contract with this orphanage and be required to work here to repay your debt until the age of eighteen, at which point you are free once more to go out on your own or chose to stay here and continue to work.”
The green eyed girl sat there staring at Ethan for a moment, he was not aware if she would agree to stay or go about her own way, either way was no difference to Ethan. The fact that she fainted in the presence of his magic was proof that she lacked any magical talent so he would have little use for her later on, if anything it would be apity to lose a future cook or seamstress for the hamlet. The girl’s tiny fist clinched up as a tear rolled down her cheek, perhaps due to the sorrow of losing her mother or that she was being forced to make a major life choice at such a young age. “Thank you for saving me Mr. Krow, I believe that I would have died there in that alley with my mother if you had not come along. I am forever in your debt and would be honored to stay here if you allow me to.” A smile crossed Ethan’s face as he patted the girl’s head. “Of course you may stay. Now I shall give you time to rest.” And with that Ethan left the room and headed towards the entrance of the orphanage.
The summer rain seemed to bounce off the roof causing a peaceful melody to take over the old home. Ethan stood at the door looking outside with a small smile on his face. He looked over the small area that he had grown accustomed to for the past fifty or so years. It was untouched by time, untouched by the wars of the world, and pure like the children who filled its homes. While there was so much purity in the land Ethan’s mind could not help wander back towards the cavern below where the criminals laid. He had also called those caverns home and those that filled them family for the past eighty years. He had taken in many of them as children each with a scene that was similar to the young girl’s very own. Many of them were left on the roadside for dead at such a young age that they should not have seen the darkness that this world held. Ethan realized that all those years ago.
He made a vow back then that he would take these children and all those that sought shelter from the established monarchy and their laws. He would educate them, teach them how to be cunning, how to blend into society, how to survive, how to thrive. Ethan established very early on a code among these people. A code that all those that sought his protection and guidance would follow or death would be punishment. He sought a group of people that sought for a society that was without a single ruler or an oligarchy but organized chaos. A land where those that could survive would rule and those that could not fight would be protected by the strong. He did not care about the means which they achieved such a goal, be it stealing or killing. All that mattered was that in the end his family was left on top.
Ethan placed his hand on the doorknob but instead of turning it he would teleport back to that cavern below the cottage where his family lived. He would appear in the center of the mess hall where dozens of men and women sat around eating and drinking, discussing different tricks and trades. Once his presence was known the room fell silent. By using a slight bit of his magic to set ambiance Ethan’s presence quickly filled the room. “My brothers and sisters, today I have once again ventured out into the world of man and saw with my own two eyes the horrors that these people have caused. Many of you today saw the frail child carried by me to this home. This child was left on the streets like many of you, this child and her mother were forgotten by the people of the world, this child had her innocence ripped from her and thrown into the garbage like many of you. Why is it that the people of the world seem to pay no mind to rip out a child’s innocence? Why is it that these people care more about what is in their pockets than what fills the bellies of the hungry? Why is it that these lords and ladies care more about their blood ties and names then the people that they have built their empire on? It is time for the statues quo of this realm to be flipped. It is time for the people casted out to take charge! It is time that we show our true face to this world. No longer will we be an organization hired out by whomever pays the price, no longer will we sit back and watch these horrors, no more will we let the monarchy of the world tell us who gets the right to live and who gets the right to die! I call to you my family, will you stand behind me as I bring forth Mummer’s Troupe to the light! We will pave the streets with the blood of the nobles, taking their fortunes and giving it back to those that they took it from! We will overthrow the Magic Council and the guilds that back it, showing them that their ignorance is not always bliss! Who is with me?!”
Ethan stood for but a mere moment before the cheers of his brethren filled the cavern. It seems that they all heard his message and accepted it. With their backing and the network that Mummer’s Troupe had acquired for the past eighty years it was time for the world of Fiore to know their name. They were one entity hidden in the shadows. They would be the boogiemen that the lords and ladies would tell their children, they would be the saviors that the beggars had prayed for, they would be the blade that cut the fat belly of the government once and for all!
