FT School for Aspiring Mages Idea [Idea by Requiem]

Something like a school would make for a ton of interesting scenarios for student and professional mage alike. I myself think that B is about the right time to graduate but otherwise i'm all for it and also....

Dark Guilds are outlawed and prosecuted as criminal associations. There is an officially recognized boarding school that prepares people to enter them. Ok.

Well Claire, we kind of the figured this institution would be an independent organisation which merely seeks to further the use of magic rather than teaching them what to use it for.

I know it doesn't make perfect sense but I think some interesting relationships could be established between characters this way. Field trips to guilds, professional mages giving lectures and we could probably stem a few newbie events out of it while we're at it.

Nothing's set in stone but i'd like to think this could turn out more than okay if we let it

Anyone seen Sky High? That and the Winx Club? If so, I believe this school would be a model of those two shows. Seeing as a school is an independent entity, anyone is allowed. BUT, to make it like movie high school, have 2 schools set up. One dark and one light. Wanderers get to choose where they go.

LIGHT: These harbour the light mages and those associated with justice. They are taught by Rune Knights and other high level mages correlated with the 'good.'

DARK: They are the school of the dark and evil. They welcome it and the chaos it brings. BUT, as a school, evil deeds are reprimanded if within the school. Outside, well, that's where the fun is. There are taught by dark high level mages. If registered in school and a C rank and below, they will face juvy and or school suspension. If more than once caught, they are jailed.

RELATIONSHIP: Needles to say, both schools hold a rivalry. It's quite intense that sometimes the RK are forced to step in and put a stop to the chaos.

The above is just a rough draft but I think it'll work out.

this seems like an entirely independent rp universe. Great idea. Not going to be heavily used.

Might as well go to the extreme consequences and have the Dark school enforce an upside-down values system, like Evil Academy in Disgaea 3. Like, people who study and attend classes are delinquents, and people who skip class and cheat are honor students

Maybe for dark mages it can be an underground school. Or the class can be disguised as a "good guild" class and the teachers if are well know can have facial reconstruction surgery or use transformation magic to pretend they are a different person.

Or it could be like in Legends of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel. In that game, the protagonist enlist to a military academy, but some open-minded teachers, as part of a special curriculum, make them experience things that are well beyond the scope of what you would imagine a military academy to be like. Here it could be a similar thing, with kids being taught about the dark side of magic because, well, that is magic too. The school would NOT actively encourage kids to go join Dark Guilds, of course, but still, those in charge of it would feel that KNOWING about them is important, and is certainly more useful, for the kids, than pretending the dark side doesn't exist.

So yeah, there would be only one school (having a school dedicated solely to evil would honestly feel silly), and that school wouldn't actively encourage joining the (still technically outlawed) Dark Guilds, nor actively form partnerships with them. But still, you could have a teacher who is a former member of a Dark Guild, field trips that "just happen" to bring kids to places where they would,"by mere chance", they would run into Dark Guilds (it would obviously be a set up by those in charge of the academy, whose goal is to get the kids to see the reality of the Dark Guilds with their own two eyes and form their own opinion, rather than blindly believing rumors), and so on.

It would be very difficult to pull off: insist too much on the dark aspect and it will not feel credible, but if you don't insist on it enough, the whole thing will end up ending like a meaningless plot device done for the sake of edginess. It will be a challenge to find the perfect balance (as in, have the school's faculty plan for the kids to get in contact with JUST ENOUGH dark side, not once per field trip but not once per year either, and have a perfectly logical explanation for it each time), but it is worth the try IMO.

For it to work, however, our Dark Guilds should need to be more in the grey zone, compared to the anime. Like, they would need to be characterized as extremists who have strong ideals, and aren't afraid of using illegal means to pursue them, rather than, you know, evil people doing evil deeds of evilness for the sake of being evil.

I wanna say back when I ran a Dragonball Z RPG I had two schools VBFS and GBFS (Vegeta's Basic FIghting School & Goku's Basic Fighting School). One was for evil characters the other for good and neutral characters could go to either one. In order to surpass certain powerlevel thresholds you had to pass your chikara class. Each Chikara level had it's own teachers (Only requirement for teachers was you had to be above the Chikara class you wanted to teach) The class entailed on the teacher and student or students rping together whether it was basic lessons, teaching techniques (minor basic techniques/attacks), or having sparring matches between the students themselves.

It was interesting and added a different flavor to dragonball z type game that is normally just based on transformations and fighting as much as you can. Some teachers offered tests to pass the course based on what they told/taught others had a sparring match with them and the students. I can say it was something that separated my rpg from others and everyone loved it.

Please read my latest post (directly above Kyoto's which in turn is directly above yours). I think I addressed this in a way that makes it interesting (in that it adds a layer to Dark Guilds, instead of having them be just "lol evil") while still making sense (I.E. no "let's teach kids how to join a criminal syndacate!") from an in-universe standpoint.

I like the idea, so i think we should have it come to life.
